Long standing Mandāgni (diminished digestive power) and Ajīrṇa (indigestion) cause generalized enlargement of the abdomen and this condition is known as Udara Roga. Out of the eight types of udara Roga four are Doṣaja viz. Vātodara, Pittodara, Kaphodara and Sannipātodar, fifth is due to the enlargement of spleen or liver i.e. Plīhodara and Yakṛddālyudara, sixth is due to the intestinal obstruction i.e. Baddha – Gudodara, seventh is due to the injury of the abdomen i.e. Parisrāvyudara and the last is due to the accumulation of fluid i.e. Jalodara.

Signs and Symptoms


Distension of abdomen, loss of appetite, indigestion, retention of flatus and faeces, weakness, fatigue, difficulty in walking, oedema, burning sensation and torpor are the general signs and symptoms of Udara Roga. In addition to these, followings are the specific signs and symptoms of Doṣaja Udara Roga.

1. Vātodara: Dry cough, constipation, oedema over hands and feet, sounds in the intestine and resonant sound on percussion are the signs and symptoms of Vātodara.

2. Pittodara: Fever, burning sensation, giddiness, fainting, diarrhea, thirst, soft abdomen on palpation and tendency to suppurate are the signs and symptoms of Pittodara.

3. Kaphodara: Oedema, heaviness in the body, excessive sleep, loss of appetite, nausea, cough, dyspnoea and firm and cold abdomen on palpation are the signs and symptoms of Kaphodara.

4. Saanipātodara: It occurs due to slow poisoning. Emaciation, anaemia, frequent fainting, dryness in the mouth are the main signs and symptoms of Sannipātodara.

Treatment


The patients suffering from Pittodara and Sannipātodara should be treated in the hospital. The treatment of Vātodara and Kaphodara is as follows.

Single Drugs


1. Śuddha Narsāra (purified ammonium chloride) – 0.5 g. is to be taken with 50 ml. warm water twice a day.

2. Fruit of Pippalī (long Pepper) – 1 g. is to be taken with Kṛṣṇa Lavaṇa and 100 ml. Takra (butter milk) twice a day.

Simple Preparations


1. Decoction of Triphalā – 14 to 28 ml. is to be taken with 7 to 14 ml. Eraṇḍa Taila (castor oil) twice a day.

2. Gomūtra Siddha Daśamūla Kvātha – 14 to 28 ml. is to be taken twice a day.

Compound Preparations


1. Hiṅgvāṣṭaka Cūrṇa: 3 to 6 g., to be taken with 50 ml. warm water twice a day.

2. Rasonādi Vaṭī: 2 to 4 pills are to be taken with 50 ml. warm water twice a day.

3. Śaṅkha Bhasma: 250 to 750 mg. is to be taken with 50 ml. warm water twice a day.

4. Kalyāṇa Kṣāram: 5 to 10 g. is to be taken with 5 to 10 g. ghee, quarter hour before meal or one hour after meal twice a day.

5. Arka Lavaṇa: 1 g. is to be taken with 50 ml. warm water twice a day.

6. Vāsā Kaṇṭakārī Lehyam: 3 to 6 g. is to be taken one hour before or after meal twice a day.

7. Pippalī Ghṛta: 12 to 24 g. is to be taken with 100 ml. warm water or milk twice a day.

Local Applications


1. Apply Tila Taila (gingelly oil) or Sarṣapa Taila (mustar oil) or Eraṇḍa Taila (castor oil) on the abdomen and give hot fomentation.

Treatment

Simple Preparations


1. Take fruits of Yavānī (ptychotis), Śveta Jīraka (cumin) and Marica (black pepper), Śuṇṭhī (dried ginger), root of Pippalī (long pepper) and Saindhava (rock salt) in equal parts and make the powder. Its 3 to 6 g. is to be taken with 5 g. honey and 100 ml. Takra (butter milk) twice a day.

2. Decoction prepared from the bark of Śigru (horse-radish) – 14 to 28 ml. is to be taken after adding 1 to 3 g. powder of equal parts of root of Pippalī (long pepper), Marica (black pepper) and fruit of Amlavetasa twice a day.

3. Decoction prepared from Śuṇṭhī (dried ginger) – 14 to 28 ml. is to be taken by adding 2 g. powdered fruit rind of Harītakī (chebulic myrobalan) and 7 to 14 ml. Gomūtra (cow’s urine) twice a day.

Compound Preparations


1. Hiṅgvāṣṭaka Cūrṇa: 3 to 6 g. is to be taken with 50 ml. warm water twice a day.

2. Daśamūla Kvātha: 14 to 28 ml. is to be taken with 7 to 14 ml. Eraṇḍa Taila (castor oil) twice a day.

3. Śaṅkha Vaṭī: 2 to 4 pills are to be taken with 50 ml. warm water twice a day.

4. Rasonādi Vaṭī: 2 to 4 pills, to be taken with 50 ml. warm water twice a day.
