Unmāda is a disease characterized by the unsteady state of mind (Mana), intellect (Buddhi), orientation (Sañjñā Jñāna), memory (Smṛti), insight (Bhaktī), character (Śīla), behaviour (Ceśṭā) and conduct (Ācāra).

Signs and Symptoms


Confusion of intellect, fickleness of mind; loss of memory, power of understanding and wits; no feeling of pleasure or grief, abnormal behaviour towards the society and duties; irregular and incoherent talk, restlessness, unsteadiness, agitation of the eyes and mental vacuity are the general signs and symptoms of Unmāda.

Treatment

Single Drugs


1. Powder of root of Vacā (sweet flag) – 1 to 2 g., to be taken twice daily with cow’s milk.

2. Svarasa obtained from the leaf of Brāhmī (Indian pennywort) – 14 to 28 ml., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. cow’s milk twice a day.

3. Paste (Kalka) prepared from the root of Sarpagandhā (rauwolfia) – 3 to 6 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. of cow’s milk.

4. Powdered whole plant of Brāhmī (Indian pennywort) – 1 to 3 g., to be taken with 4 to 6 g. honey or 100 to 250 ml. cow’s milk thrice a day.

5. Powdered root of Kuṣṭha (kooth) – 2 g., to be taken with 4 to 6 g. honey twice a day.

6. Powdered root of Sarpagandhā (rauwolfia) – 1 to 2 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. cow’s milk thrice a day.

7. Fluid obtained from the fruit of Nārikela (coconut) – 100 ml., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. Śarkarā (raw sugar) twice a day.

8. Paste (Kalka) prepared from the whole plant of Śaṅkhapuṣpī – 12 to 24 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. cow’s milk twice a day.

9. Powdered root of Jaṭāmaṁsī – 1 to 3 g., to be taken twice a day with cow’s milk.

Simple Preparations


1. Purāṇa Ghṛta (1 year old ghee of cow) – 3 g., Vibhītaka Majjā (decorticated seed of beleric myrobalan) – 1.5 g., honey-3 g. and Śarkarā (raw sugar) – 5 to 10 g., to be taken with Dhāroṣṇa Godugdha (freshly milched cow’s milk)-100 to 250 ml. twice a day.

Compound Preparations


1. Sārasvata Cūrṇa: 0.5 to 2 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. cow’s milk twice a day.

2. Sarpagandhā Vaṭī: 1 to 2 Vaṭī, to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. cow’s milk twice a day.

3. Drākṣāsava: 14 to 28 ml., to be taken with equal quantity of water twice a day after meal.

4. Kalyāṇaka Ghṛta: 6 to 12 g., to be taken twice a day with cow’s milk.

5. Mahā-Pañca Gavya Ghṛta: 6 to 12 g., to be taken with cow’s milk twice a day.

Local Applications


1. Apply freshly prepared cow’s butter to the head of the patient.

2. Prepare a Lepa by grinding fruit rind of Āmalakī (embelic myrobalan) – 25 to 50 g. in sufficient quantity of Takra (butter milk). Apply this Lepa (plaster) on the Brahmarandhra (crown of the head) once in the morning and retain till dry.

3. Lepa prepared from the fresh juice of leaf of Brāhmī (Indian pennywort) – 60 ml., fresh juice of rhizome of Haridrā (turmeric) – 15 ml., powdered rhizome of Jaṭāmāṁsī (spikenard) – 12 g. and Śarkarā (raw sugar) – 12 g. is to be applied on the Brahmarandhra (crown of the head) twice a day. It is to be retained till dry.

4. Himasāgara Taila: to be applied on the head twice a day.

5. Visṇu Tail (Bṛhat): to be applied on the head twice a day.

Pathya


Śāli variety of rice, Mudga (phaseolus bean), Dhāroṣṇa Godugdha (freshly milched cow’s milk), Leaves of Brāhmī (Indian pennywort), Taṇḍulīya (a variety of amaranth) and Vāstūka (a variety of chenopodium), leaf and fruit of Paṭola (a variety of small cucumber), fruit of Kūṣmāṇḍa (a variety of pumpkin gourd) and Drākṣā (raisin or grape fruit) are the useful articles of diet for the patient of Unmāda.

Apathya


Incompatible articles of food, hot spicy food and wines are harmful. Suppression of natural urges like sleep, hunger and thirst should be avoided.
