Signs and Symptoms


Rājayakṣmā is a wasting disease characterized by low grade fever, loss of appetite, night sweating and loss of weight. In all cases of unexplained fever, one of the cause may be tuberculosis. Its other symptoms depend upon the organ of the body involved.

Lung is the most commonly involved organ and in that case patient may have the symptoms like evening rise of temperature, cough, haemoptysis, hoarseness of voice, night sweating, loss of appetite, loss of weight, pain in scapular region and ribs and burning sensation in sole and palm.

Treatment

Single Drugs


1. The use of Ajā Dugdha, Ghṛta and Māṁsa (goat’s milk ghee and meat) is very beneficial for the patient of Rājayakṣmā.

2. Take butter with honey and 12 to 24 g. Śarkarā (raw sugar) according to the appetite of the patient.

3. Powdered whole plant of Kākajaṅghā-1 to 3 g., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

4. Powder of Śuddha Lākṣā (purified lac) – 1 to 3 g., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

5. Powdered Nāgabalā 1 to 3 g., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

6. Powdered fruit of Pippalī – 1 g., to be taken with 12 to 24 g. ghee and 250 ml. Godugdha (cow’s milk) three times a day.

Simple Preparations


1. Juice (Svarasa) of fresh leaf of Vāsā – 14 to 28 ml., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

2. Powder of root of Yaṣṭimadhu (glycyrrhiza) – 3 to 6 g. and wood of Rakta Candana (red sandal) – 3 to 6 g., to be taken with 250 ml. milk three times a day.

3. Powder of equal part of fruits of Kharjūra (date), Pippalī (long pepper), Drākṣā (raisin) and Karkaṭaśṛṅgī (crab’s claw), fruit rind of Harītakī (chebulic myrobalan) and whole plant of Durālabhā (camel’s thorn) – 3 to 6 g., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

4. Kalka (paste) of equal part of fruits of Kharjūra (date) and Drākṣā (raisin) – 12 to 24 g. is to be taken with 1 g. powdered fruit of Pippalī, 5 to 10 g. Śarkarā (raw sugar) and honey, three times a day.

5. Powder of equal part of fruit of Pippalī (long pepper), roots of Aśvagandhā and Yaṣṭimadhu (glycyrrhiza) and seed of Kapikacchū (cowage) – 3 to 6 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. goat’s milk twice a day.

6. Powder of equal part of fruit of Pippalī (long pepper), Drākṣā (raisin) and Śarkarā (raw sugar) – 3 to 6 g., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

7. Powder of equal part of root of Aśvagandhā (winter cherry), fruit of Pippalī (long pepper) and Śarkarā (raw sugar) – 3 to 6 g., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

8. Powder of equal part of Triphalā, fruit of Pippalī (long pepper), root of Mustaka (motha), nut of Śṛṅgāṭaka (water chestnut) and Śarkarā (raw sugar) – 3 to 6 g., to be taken with honey three time a day.

9. Powder of equal part of roots of Kṣīra-Kākolī, Puṣkara (costus) and Śaṭī (zedoary), seed of Tulasī (sacred basil), Śarkarā (raw sugar) and Guḍa (jaggery) – 3 to 6 g., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey and 5 to 10 g. Ghṛta (ghee) three times a day.

10. Use of meat of pigeon, deer and goat (dried powder) – 12 to 24 g., to be taken with 250 ml. goat’s milk.

11. Decoction of equal part of fruit Dhānyaka (coriander) and Pippalī (long pepper), seed of Dāḍima (pomegranate) and Śuṇṭhī (dried ginger) – 14 to 28 ml., to be taken three times a day.

12. Decoction of equal part of roots of Aśvagandhā (winter cherry), Śatāvarī (wild asparagus), Atibalā (country mallow), Puṣkara (costus) and Ativiṣā (Indian atees), Daśamūla, stem of Guḍūcī, and leaf of Vāsā – 14 to 28 ml., to be taken three times a day.

13. Decoction of stem of Guḍūcī – 14 to 28 ml., to be taken with 1 g. powdered fruit of Pippalī (long pepper) three times a day.

14. Decoction of equal part of fruit rind of Harītakī (chebulic myrobalan) and Āmalakī (embelic myrobalan), fruit pulp of Āragvadha (cassia) and rhizome of Kaṭukī – 14 to 28 ml., to be taken three times a day. This preparation is useful when patient is having constipation

Compound Preparations


1. Elādi Cūrṇa: 1 to 3 g., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

2. Sitopalādi Cūrṇa: 1 to 3 g., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

3. Tālīsādi Cūrṇa: 1 to 3 g., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

4. Mahā-Lakṣmī Vilāsa Rasa: 1 to 2 Vaṭī, to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

5. Jayamaṇgala Rasa: 60 to 250 mg., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

6. Caturmukha Rasa: 60 to 250 mg., to be taken with 5 to 10 mg., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

7. Candrāmṛta Rasa: 120 to 250 mg., to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

8. Svarṇa-Vasanta-Mālatī (Laghu): 1 to 2 Vaṭī, to be taken with 5 to 10 g. honey three times a day.

9. Amṛtaprāśa: 12 to 24 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. warm milk three times a day.

10. Vāsāvaleha: 12 to 24 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. warm milk three times a day.

11. Cyavanaprāśavaleha: 12 to 24 g., to be taken with 100 to 250 ml. warm milk three times a day.

12. Drākṣāsava or Drakṣāriṣṭa: 14 to 28 ml., to be taken with equal quantity of water twice a day after meal.

13. Dhanvantara Guṭikā: 1 g., to be taken three times a day with 14 to 28 ml. decoction of Jīraka.

If the patient does not respond to the treatment refer to a specialist.

Pathya


Śāli (red variety of rice), Godhūma (wheat), seeds of Yava (barley) and Mudga (phascolus bean); fruits of Dāḍima (pomegranate), Āmalakī (embelic myrobalan) and Āmra (mango); Ajā Dugdha (goat’s milk), Balā Siddha Dugdha, Suvāsita Jala (scented water), Madya (Wine with caution); Ajā or Mṛga Māṁsa (goat’s or deer’s meat), Karkaṭa Māṁsa (crab’s meat) and meat of wild animals are the useful articles of diet for the patient of Rāja-Yakṣmā.

Apathya


Food prepared in Taila (oil), Vṛntāka (brinjal), fruits of Kāravellaka (bitter gourd), Bilva (bael) and Ajājī are harmful for the patient of Rājayakṣmā. Sexual intercourse, day sleep and anger should be avoided.
