FOREWORD

(G.S. LAVEKAR), Director General, CCRAS

Ayurveda is the rich traditional Indian Medical heritage, serving the humanity since the Vedic times. Three great classics (Br̥hattrayī) are said to be to the pillars in learning the Ayurvedic system of medicine. Suśrutasaṁhitā is the most ancient, comprehensive and authoritative textbook of surgery among the two early manuscripts, which form the corner stones of Indian medical system Ayurveda. Suśrutasaṁhitā is compiled by Sage Suśruta based on the teachings of the expounder Divōdāsa Dhanvantari and redacted by Nāgārjuna by adding uttaratantra to the compendium. Later on pāṭhaśuddhi is done by Candraṭa. This is the first comprehensive manuscript thrown light on fundamentals of practice of surgery on human beings. Ācārya Suśruta is considered as the father of Surgery. Every scholar of Ayurvedic medicine needs to study this compendium along with Carakasaṁhitā to attain comprehensive knowledge in Ayurvedic medical science

In the process of globalization, to introduce Ayurvedic system to the global citizens the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha, felt the need of bringing out electronic form of all ancient Ayurvedic classics to facilitate pedagogy empowered by digital technology. In a sequence, next to the Carakasaṁhitā we are bringing out the foremost important Ayurvedic classic the Suśrutasaṁhitā in e-Book form. This book is containing the mūlapāṭha of six sthāna of Suśrutasaṁhitā along with Nibandhasaṅgraha commentary of Dalhaṇa and Nyāyacandrikā commentary of Gayadāsa. I feel delighted in presenting the second e-book on Suśrutasaṁhitā which incorporates mūlapāṭha, commentary and relevant footnotes. I hope this will cater the demands of the Ayurvedic scholars, Researchers, students & practitioners.

I appreciate the untired efforts of Dr. Ala Narayana, Director, National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage, Hyderabad and his team's dedication and commitment in preparing this e-Book in a short period of time.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Secretary and Joint Secretary, Dept. of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, for their keen interest, encouragement and appreciation of the work.
